Last week, my CL teacher was teaching to us the different images of the Church. Strangely enough, I decided that day to start paying attention in every class (this is the result of seeing my insanely average grades earlier that week). So, while I was trying to comprehend the asininity of it all, I came across a quite amusing concept. One of the images of the Church mentioned in the hand-out given, “The Church as Body of Christ”, explains that God is present in the world through Christians. “Now you are the body of Christ, each of you with a part to play in the whole (1 Cor 12:27). Some are hands, some are the mind, some are the heart. Christ is the head of the Body.” Our teacher then explained that when Christians attend Mass, they are one community, coming together to partake the body of Christ.
Wait a minute.
Didn’t the hand-out just say that Christians, the Church, is the body of Christ?
Recap: The Lord is present in the world through Christians being the Body of Christ and during Mass, Christians “eat” the Body of Christ in the form of bread. So the Body of Christ eats the Body of Christ?
And the Church wonders why people think they’re cannibals.
